Digitalization Strategy and LIMS Implementation for a Biotech Company
Digitalization strategy for implementing LIMS or ELN system; Research on ERP, APS, MES; Preparation of software requirements specifications (SRS).

Altar is a fast-growing French biotech start-up that designs and operates proprietary automated cultivation technology (now part of Ginkgo Bioworks). Their highly robust and fully automated fluidic technology harnesses natural selection to reach targeted phenotypes through genomic mutations that are difficult or impossible to predict.
Altar’s strategy was to support its growth with software solutions for lab digitalization. Their main challenges were the automation of several laboratory processes, data management and laboratory management, as well as streamlined communication and exchange of experiment reports with customers.
BioSistemika thoroughly studied Altar’s needs, mapped its business processes, and proposed a LIMS system. In close collaboration with Altar, BioSistemika also defined requirements and developed a prototype for Altar’s online platform.
We approached the project in stages. Starting with an evaluation of the current situation, followed by gap analysis and solution proposal, implementation of LIMS, and finalizing with a proof-of-concept of the custom online web platform.

The project resulted in the successful digitalization of multiple Altar’s laboratory processes.
The company will continue with digitalization efforts per its business needs and strategy while setting the example to other CROs as a company that utilizes digitalization to support business agility and growth.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 761708.
